The Indian stock market ended the volatile session with losses of over 3 percent on Wednesday, as investors fretted over rising Covid-19 cases, a sluggish economic recovery, and US-China tensions.
The BSE Sensex closed 344.36 points, or 0.60 percent, lower at 57,554.45, while the Nifty 50 index ended the session at 16,974.90, down 101.20 points, or 0.59 percent.
Among the sectoral indices, the Nifty PSU Bank index was the worst hit, down 4.03 percent, followed by the Nifty Media index, which ended 3.72 percent lower. The Nifty Metal index ended the session 1.96 percent lower.
Among the stocks, the top losers included ONGC, Reliance Industries, UPL, State Bank of India, and IndusInd Bank. On the other hand, the top gainers included Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, Asian Paints, and JSW Steel.
