Nigeria elects governors following the contested presidential election

In the wake of the disputed Nigerian presidential election, the country held gubernatorial elections in 29 of its 36 states in March 2019. The elections, which took place in an atmosphere of heightened tension, were largely considered to be free and fair by international observers. Despite some reports of irregularities, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared that the elections were credible and successful. The elections saw the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) win in 21 states and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 8.
