Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to issue an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In a statement, Zelensky said, “The decision of the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant against President Putin is a historic step towards justice and accountability. This is a major victory for the victims of the war in Ukraine and a strong signal that those responsible for serious international crimes must be held accountable.”

He added that the ICC’s decision “confirms the fact that the Russian Federation is to blame for the ongoing war in eastern Ukraine and is responsible for the death and suffering of thousands of people.”

He further noted that the ICC’s decision was a “powerful reminder that the rule of law applies to all and that no one is above the law.”

The Ukrainian president also stressed that the decision was a “significant step” towards restoring peace and security in Ukraine and the region. He said that the arrest warrant should serve as a deterrent for those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity. He also called on the international community to take all necessary measures to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
