The Supreme Court of Pakistan has started hearing a petition filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) seeking that the court reconsider its order regarding the holding of elections in the Punjab province. The ECP had requested the court to reconsider its order of April 13, which directed the provincial government to hold elections in the province by the end of June. The court had ordered the provincial government to hold elections no later than June 30.
The court has asked the ECP to explain why it believes the elections should not be held on the date prescribed by the court. The court has also sought the views of the federal government and the provincial government on the matter. The court is expected to decide on the matter by the end of this month.
If the court decides to uphold its previous order, then the provincial government will have to hold elections by June 30. However, if the court decides to change its order, then the provincial government will have to make arrangements for the elections within the new timeline set by the court.
