The Indian rupee on Thursday fell 15 paise to close at 82.33 against the US dollar. This marked its lowest closing level since April 27.
The rupee opened lower at 82.25 against the US dollar, and slipped further to touch an intra-day low of 82.38. It finally closed at 82.33 against the US dollar, down 15 paise over its previous close. Forex traders said that the rupee weakened due to strong demand for the US dollar amid surging Covid-19 cases and rising crude oil prices.
The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.08 per cent to 92.46. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex ended 677.44 points, or 1.43 per cent, higher at 48,176.17, and the broader NSE Nifty advanced 184.35 points, or 1.30 per cent, to 14,296.20.
