Social media in China has banned the comic Uncle Roger

News

Uncle Roger, a character on the Chinese streaming platform Bilibili, has been banned from Chinese social media after a sketch posted online drew criticism from viewers. In the video, Uncle Roger, who is portrayed by Hong Kong-based comedian Nigel Ng, was seen asking a woman to cook a meal for him in a condescending and sexist manner. After the sketch circulated on Chinese social media, it led to criticism from many viewers who felt it was sexist and inappropriate.

As a result, Bilibili has reportedly banned all content featuring the character on its platform. While the video has been taken down, clips from the videos have circulated widely on Chinese social media and have even gone viral on other platforms such as Twitter in recent days.

The Chinese media regulator, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, has yet to comment on the matter.
