Nifty trades below 18,300 while the Sensex drops more than 200 points to close the day at 61,773

Indian markets witnessed a sharp decline on Tuesday as the benchmark indices – BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty -were both trading over 200 points lower.

At close, the BSE Sensex was at 61,773, down 216 points or 0.35% and the NSE Nifty fell to 18,296, down 64 points or 0.35%.

During the day, Sensex had swung between a high of 62,063.27 and a low of 61,519.47, while the Nifty touched an intra-day peak of 18,394.90.

Among the sectoral indices, the Nifty IT index was the biggest gainer, up 0.76%. Nifty Auto, Private Bank and Bank were down over half a percent, while the FMCG and Pharma indices were down over 0.3%.

The top gainers in the Sensex pack were Reliance Industries, Infosys, Tech Mahindra and Bharti Airtel, while the losers were ICICI Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC Bank.

On the NSE, YES Bank, Piramal Enterprises and ICICI Bank were the biggest gainers, while Bharti Infratel, Apollo Hospital and Power Grid were the top losers.

The market breadth at the close of trading was negative with 1143 advances and 1239 declines.
