The Indian benchmark indices opened in the red on Thursday following subdued global markets. The Sensex opened lower by 96 points at 61,730 points, while the Nifty was down 16 points to 18,269.
Axis Bank was the top loser in the Sensex pack, with its shares falling by nearly 2 per cent. On the other hand, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Industries were the gainers, with their shares rising by 0.5 per cent.
Among the sectoral indices, the Nifty PSU Bank index was down nearly 1 per cent, while the Nifty auto and Nifty media indices were both down 0.5 per cent.
The Indian rupee opened weak at 73.74 against the US dollar.
