DeSantis, a Republcan, has been an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump, and his presidential bid reflects the strong support he has received from Trump.Trump has praised DeSantis for his successes in the state of Florida and for his handling of the coronavirus crisis.

DeSantis, 40, became governor of Florida in 2018 and has quickly established himself as a force in the national Republican party. He has positioned himself as a champion of Trump policies, and he is expected to use this as part of his appeal in the Republican primary.

The Republican presidential primary has a crowded field, and DeSantis faces stiff competition from politicians such as former Vice President Mike Pence, former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, and former President George W. Bush.
