In response to recent clashes between the Kosovo police and ethnic Serb forces, Serbia’s military has placed its forces on a state of high alert along the border with Kosovo. The government has deployed additional troops to the Serb dominated areas of northern and eastern Kosovo in an effort to control a potentially tense situation. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has said that the military presence is designed only to protect Serbs living in the region, and that Serbia does not want war. Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Ramush Haradinaj, has called for calm in the region and promised to investigate the clashes. The U.S., EU, and NATO have called on both sides to work to de-escalate the situation.
