Ukraine’s military said it had shot down 10 missiles during an attack by Russian forces on an oil depot, destroying one of the missiles.
The Kyiv-based military said the attack occurred around 4 a.m. local time on Sunday in the eastern region of Luhansk and that the failed missile strike was similar to previous attacks by Russia in the same area.
“To protect the population, the Ukrainian Air Force shot down the missiles coming from the direction of the occupied territories,” the military said in a statement.
The service also reported that an oil depot in the vicinity had been hit by an incendiary shell, igniting a fire. It said the fire had been extinguished.
The Russian military denied any involvement in the attack.
The incident underscores the intense fighting ongoing in the region between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatist forces, which sometimes results in the use of heavy weaponry and the destruction of infrastructure and property.
